Turkish Numbers

When learning a new language, one of the most important things to learn is its numbers. Before we start with the Turkish numbers, let’s have a quick revision on what we already know about numbers in English.

In English, in order to say any number, we need to know:

0 – zero

1 – one

2 – two

3 – three

4 – four

5 – five

6 – six

7 – seven

8 – eight

9 – nine

10 – ten

11 – eleven

12 – twelve

13 – thirteen

14 – fourteen

15 – fifteen

16 – sixteen

17 – seventeen

18 – eighteen

19 – nineteen

20 – twenty

30 – thirty

40 – forty

50 – fifty

60 – sixty

70 – seventy

80 – eighty

90 – ninety

100 – hundren

1000 – thousand

1000000 – million

1000000000 – billion

And then we can say any number by putting together some of the ones above, for example:

125 = 100 (one hundred) + 20 (twenty) + 5 (five) = one hundred twenty five

1985 = 1000 (one thousand) + 900 (nine hundred) + 80 (eighty) + 5 (five) = one thousand nine hundred eighty five

2022 = 2000 (two thousands) + 20 (twenty) + 2 (two) = two thousandss twenty two

Now, coming to Turkish, the Turkish numbers are relatively easy.  They’re even easier than English as the numbers between 11 and 19 are also the combinations of 10+1, 10+2, 10+3, and so on..

So to begin with, we have to memorize the following numbers:

0 – sıfır

1 – bir

2 – iki

3 – üç

4 – dört

5 – beş

6 – altı

7 – yedi

8 – sekiz

9 – dokuz

10 – on

20 – yirmi

30 – otuz

40 – kırk

50 – elli

60 – altmış

70 – yetmiş

80 – seksen

90 – doksan

100 – yüz

1000 – bin

1000000 – milyon

1000000000 – milyar

Now, if we want to continue, we will just put numbers together, for example:

125 = 100 (yüz) + 20 (yirmi) + 5 (beş) = yüz yirmi beş

1985 = 1000 (bin) + 900 (dokuz yüz) + 80 (seksen) + 5 (beş) = bin dokuz yüz seksen beş

2022 = 2000 (iki bin) + 20 (yirmi) + 2 (iki) = iki bin yirmi iki

Note that when we are referring to 100 or 1000 we don’t have to mention the number “bir”, it’s enough to say (yüz) to mean (one hundred) without having to state the “one”. However, when saying (two hundreds, three hundreds, two thousands, three thousands), we definetely have to specify the number, i.e.: (iki yüz, üç yüz, iki bin, üç bin).

Now let’s practice:

19: ____________________

26: ____________________

34: ____________________

47: ____________________

52: ____________________

63: ____________________

71: ____________________

88: ____________________

95: ____________________

138: ____________________

Now, let’s make it a bit harder:

1825: ____________________

1714: ____________________

2567: ____________________

248079: ____________________

19: on dokuz

26: yirmi altı

34: otuz dört

47: kırk yedi

52: elli iki

63: altmış üç

71: yetmiş bir

88: seksen sekiz

95: doksan beş

138: yüz otuz sekiz

1825: bin sekiz yüz yirmi beş

1714: bin yedi yüz on dört

2567: iki bin beş yüz altmış yedi

248079: iki yüz kırk sekiz bin yetmiş dokuz
