Lesson 7 — Yes/No Questions

Welcome to your seventh step in learning Turkish!
In this lesson, you will learn how to turn your descriptive sentences into questions. By using the interrogative particle "mi" (which changes based on vowel harmony), you will be able to ask others about states, identities, and qualities, opening the door to active participation in conversations.

What You Will Learn

  • The Interrogative Particle: Understanding how to use mi/mı/mu/mü to create "Yes/No" questions.
  • Vowel Harmony in Questions: Learning how the particle changes form to match the last vowel of the preceding word.
  • Question Structure: How to correctly place the particle to ask about subjects (e.g., "Is the man hardworking?", "Is the woman beautiful?").
  • Basic Responses: How to give simple "Yes" (Evet) or "No" (Hayır) answers.

📝 Important Notes

  • Separate Particle: Unlike English, where we often change word order (e.g., "He is hardworking" → "Is he hardworking?"), in Turkish, we keep the word order the same and simply add the question particle mi as a separate word.
  • Vowel Harmony Rules: The vowel in mi must harmonize with the last vowel of the word before it. This is a vital skill for sounding natural.
  • Punctuation: Remember that in Turkish, the question particle is always written as a separate word.
